About Fair Trade

While the origins of the fair trade movement can be traced to Europe, Australia is at the centre of a regional network of ethical businesses and trade justice organisations.

Fair Trade in our region is promoted by the Fair Trade Association of Australia & New Zealandn (FTAANZ)

The following definition of Fair Trade has been agreed on by a coalition of international organisations. It is known as the FINE definition, as agreed on by:

Fairtrade Labelling Organisation

International Fair Trade Association

Network of European Worldshops

European Fair Trade Association

Fair trade is a trading partnership based on dialogue, transparency and respect, that seeks greater equity in international trade. It contributes to community development and environmental sustainability through fair prices, livelihood security, capacity building, and community–directed projects, for example in health care, education, or reforestation. Fair Trade organisations are also active in raising awareness and calling for changes to the rules and practices of international trade.”

There is a wide variety of businesses which market and sell ethical products and commodities on the web, as well as a growing community of fair trade shops in cities like Brisbane. For more information on where to buy fair trade, check out our business members here.
