Rebuilding after the Yogyakarta earthquake

In May of 2006, a devastating earthquake hit the Indonesian city of Yogyakarta.  Among the thousands of people affected by the tragedy were a number of fair trade families who lost their homes.

Funds raised by the WA and Qld Fair Trade Collectives during 2007 and 2008 has been directed towards rebuilding homes and workspaces for five families in Yogyakarta.



The type of building shown above is cheap to construct, but structurally weak in the long term and in earthquake events.

Homes of  a more permanent building construction (below) have been provided for five families

This craftsperson now has a new workspace to replace the area that was destroyed during the earthquake


This family now has a house consisting of  a workspace, kitchen, bedroom and living area that will provide sound structure for themselves and their newborn daughter.
